Brooding over past hurts can reopen wounds. We can grow a "root of bitterness" if we are not careful—many have. We do need to learn from the past—and thus it is not wise to try to forget it totally. What we need is an unemotional assessment of a difficulty so that we can learn from it and avoid repeating it. When we rehearse with our heart and emotions, we relive the difficulty and it is born again.

We must use the good of past experiences but "unthink" (that is, clear our minds for "accurate thinking") the bad and build the controlled thinking we need for the future.w it to defeat and rob us of the future.
