We can get lost in words, and it is very easy to wander about on any topic. The practice of being concise helps us focus on putting an idea across without drifting about. One of the most remembered and most powerful speeches was given well over a hundred years ago by Abraham Lincoln. It is called the Gettysburg Address and lasted all of 2 minutes. It is almost impossible to recall any "great" speech that was wordy.

During World War II Winston Churchill demanded that his cabinet ministers write reports that were no more than one page long. He said, "It is sheer laziness not compressing thought into a reasonable space." It does take effort and concentration to be clear—many words don't mean clarity. God inspired the most important information for human beings to be written in just one book—the Bible. Paul said he wrote in "few words" (Hebrews 13:22). When a person does put in the needed time and effort, clarity comes easier. Do the work and be clear.

Another interesting thing to note about words is that some people are too silent. Look at Moses. Moses had a fear of public speaking and God had to appoint Aaron to assist Moses as public speaker....yet later on the Hebrews refused to draw near to God and asked Moses to speak to them for God because they were afraid of God. "Then they said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself and we will listen; but let not God speak to us, or we will die." (Exodus 20:19, NASB) Praise be to God that we don't live in the Old Testament times any more. "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love." 1 John 4:18 (NIV)

Occasionally you run into people who talk excessively. I like to think that some day they will discover the Fruit of the Spirit (one of the attributes of this fruit is self control)and that will make a difference in their approach to life. Until then be considerate of these people. Sometimes excessive talking is compulsive and stems from anxiety.
