The idea of one man leading the European Union is embedded in the Lisbon treaty which still hangs out there, waiting approval. Currently the leading position in the EU rotates on a six month schedule among the member states. France’s Nicolas Sarkozy just completed his term and received some high marks for his job in focusing people on key issues. The serious issues challenging the EU in the last twelve months highlight the need for someone in the permanent role of president, leading the members nations to solutions the benefit all of Europe. Russia’s attack last August on Georgia and the current dispute over natural gas shipments to Ukraine is one problem. Israel’s invasion of Gaza present another unique challenge to Europe’s role in the Middle East. Then there is the threat of the global financial crisis bearing down on all members states. Britain’s former Prime Minister, Tony Blair has often been mentioned as a choice to fill the role of EU President. This article in today’s Financial Times brings up his name once again. One EU diplomat, commenting on the need for such a person said of Nicolas Sarkozy’s tenure, “(He) concentrated minds. He made a lot of us think,’When the going gets tough, you’ve got to have a big person in this job.’” Bible prophecy foretells a time when a group of ten leaders will give their power to one “super-leader” called “the beast”. “The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. These are on one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast”. (Revelation 17:12, 13) We may not be there yet, but this verse indeed tells us when the going gets tough there will be one “big person” to step in and fill this Biblical role. I don’t think Tony Blair is the one to fill this prophesied role. But the office being created could provide the opeing for a future figure described in Revelation.
