How, then, do we draw near to God? His instruction continues: "Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded" (same verse). We must actively seek to eliminate Satan's way of thinking and behaving from our lives.

Key to resisting the influence of Satan the devil

Satan, however, is so clever and powerful that no human being can successfully resist his influence—without God's help. Therefore the key to resisting the devil is to sincerely and consistently draw near and remain close to God.

1. Recognize and acknowledge sins and repent of them.

Our first step is to allow God to wash Satan's influence from our minds. This takes place through recognizing and acknowledging our sins and repenting of them. The Scriptures compare this transformation from Satan's way of thinking to coming back to life from the dead (Ephesians 2:1-3).

2. Submit to God.

When we begin to truly repent and submit to God from the heart, we begin to take His Word seriously and to obey His instruction and commands. Then His Word, the Bible, begins cleaning up our minds, washing away our evil thoughts and motives. All who genuinely repent—who wholeheartedly surrender their will to God and are baptized so that they may receive the Holy Spirit—are placed by Jesus Christ into His Church. If you are serious about resisting Satan and submitting to God, we strongly recommend that you find a true minister of God to discuss repentance and baptism.

Now notice Christ's concern for them and how He works with them to remove evil influences from their hearts and minds: Christ "loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish" (Ephesians 5:25-27). God's Word is the instrument Christ uses—through the power of the Holy Spirit—to wash away Satan's influences from our thinking.

3. Put on the whole Armor of God.

But what can we do about the devil's attempts to influence us in the future? Here, too, God provides us with a defense: "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm" (Ephesians 6:10-13, New Revised Standard Version).

The apostle Paul then lists specific elements of the spiritual armor God makes available to us. He compares the defense of God's servants against Satan's influence to a "belt of truth around your waist" and a "breastplate of righteousness" (Ephesians 6:14). He describes their combat shoes as "whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace" (Ephesians 6:15). Their shield is their faith in God and His Son, Jesus Christ, "with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one" (Ephesians 6:16).

Their resolve is protected by "the helmet of salvation" (Ephesians 6:17)—the assurance that in steadfastly serving and pleasing God they will receive eternal life. The one offensive weapon they can use to cut to ribbons Satan's attitudes and philosophies is the "sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" (same verse).

4. Be active in daily Bible study and prayer.

Finally, Paul says, "pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints" (Ephesians 6:18). These are the essential keys for warding off Satan's efforts to regain control over us.

The more our character becomes like God's perfect nature, the less Satan will feel comfortable in our presence, and the more he will be inclined to flee from us.

Okay now listen to me for just a little bit and keep in mind that I am not a troll, I am just someone who simply thinks something is very wrong here, I created an account just to post on articles like this one. I am going to present some information to you, you can see it as "evil Satan magic" or "the temptation away from God" but as a grown adults we can all just have a little conversation about this and agree magic isn't going to solve the worlds proplems. Now first off, lets look at Satan, not as who he is, but what he does.... seriously what does he do? Now you look at temptation, and evil in the world but it never truly specifies that he is responsible for it. He gives the fruit of knowledge, and he is tricked into killing jobs family, that's pretty much it. Isn't just so convenient that as soon as hear Satan, you immediately think evil yet this is just due to a general non logical acceptance of him being evil. Should we look at names or actions. In my own opinion, actions seem to be a greater compass on a moral perspective. In saying that, stop praying, and do something to make god appreciate you instead. Our world is in a horrible place because of ignorance, not mythology

Great biblical advice. I've got to do it God's way in order to overcome the temptations of my own lusts and affections. I must strive to enter in by that strait gate, moving through the gate while not allowing sin, self, and Satan to brush against me as I do. I must ask for God's Holy Spirit so I can act like Him and think like Him, walking in His resurrection power, able to do all things thru Christ who strengthens me. Christ said this walk would not be an easy walk, it definitely wasn't for Him and it surely won't be for us. He said in this world there would be troubles, but we can be of good cheer because He has overcome this world. So yes, Satan is the God of this world but I choose to walk in good success, letting the Book of the Law not depart from my mouth but meditating on it day & night and observing to do all that is in it. And then I will make my way prosperous & and then I will have good success!!!!

How true it is that Satan deceives the whole world. Many people don't realize the full extent of his deceptions. I'm afraid the situation is really extremely bad. What God wants to see is a world where people care for each other, but what he actually sees is a world where a billion people are slowly starving to death while the rest are busy partying and shopping and constantly scheming to increase their own private wealth. From the moment we wake up until we fall asleep, we do nothing but evil; everything we do that isn't part of an attempt to try, with all our heart and soul and mind, to correct the world's injustice is sin. Indeed, even sleeping peacefully while people starve is a sin. Satan's deceptions are everywhere. He is a master at appearing like an angel of light. When the colorful consumer goods that the shops are loaded with beckon to us to shop till we drop, this is Satan tempting us to do evil with pretty appearances. Satan beckons us from junk food outlets with chips and hot dogs and other fattening and unhealthy rubbish, and he tempts us with perfumes and music and art and movies and clothing... there's no end. Our whole greed-based society is nothing but a great orgy of sin. When politicians preach to us that we contribute to society by starting a business enterprise, this is Satan tempting us, saying "Come on serve Mammon". In short, if we are to avoid evil, we must make extremely radical changes in the way we live; almost everything that we do now, we must stop doing, and we must start doing things that we almost never do now. Sorry if what I say sounds extreme. But do we really want to serve the Lord in truth? Or do we prefer to serve Satan while deceiving ourselves that we are without sin? If we prefer the latter, then by all means, keep doing what we do now; but if the former, we really need to ask ourselves some very serious questions. If God comes down and sees starving children lying on the ground while obese adults step over them to reach another cream cake to stuff themselves with, what will he say? What would you say if you were God? bjorn55
