Church Activity - Etowah Indian Mounds

Weather permitting, on Sunday, May 1st, the Atlanta and Buford church is invited to a church activity to visit the Etowah Indian Mounds in Cartersville, GA. The mounds are a Georgia State Park and Historic Site. The World History Encyclopedia offers this about the mounds:

The Etowah Indian Mounds is a National Historic Landmark and archeological site enclosing the ruins of a prehistoric Native American city whose original name is unknown. The present designation of Etowah means "town" in the language of the Muscogee-Creek Native Americans.

The city was built in three phases between c. 1000 - c. 1550 and the present site encloses three large and three smaller mounds surrounding a central plaza. The three large mounds were the chief’s residence (Mound A), the ceremonial site for religious rituals (Mound B), and the burial site for the nobility (Mound C); the smaller mounds are each attached or nearby the larger. Between the three was a plaza, which served for ceremonies, commerce, and as a ball field.

The rate for our group is $5 per person. Children are $3.50 each.

The location of the mounds is:

813 Indian Mound Rd SE, Cartersville, GA 30120-6415

The Etowah Indian Mounds State Park opens at 9 AM. Let’s meet at 10 AM to tour the historic site. (The park attendant today said that generally park visitors are lighter on Sunday mornings before noon.) We can comfortably climb the mounds and tour the museum in 1-2 hours.

Afterward, we will picnic at nearby Dellinger Park a little over a mile away.

The address for Dellinger Park is:

100 Pine Grove Rd, Cartersville, GA 30120

The location that we can picnic appears as item #15 on the Dellinger Park map. (Item 15. Walking Trail w/20 Exercise Stations highlighted in yellow.) The location is centrally located in the park near a stop sign. Basketball courts, a baseball field, a football field, a playground, and bathrooms are right nearby. Plan to bring corn hole and spike ball and other games to enjoy after lunch.

In terms of food, let’s go Bring Your Own Picnic (BYOP). I will get to Dellinger early and put brightly colored table cloths on the tables to reserve them. We can also put up a portable gazebo once we arrive there for lunch, if it's needed. There are several metal picnic tables in the shade at this spot along with two grills for charcoal grilling. If you want to bring an additional card table and chairs, please do so. They could be added to what’s already there. Further details of the picnic will be shared on Sabbath during announcements.

At the current time, there is a 60% chance of rain on Sunday. We will know more about Sunday’s weather on Sabbath. If the weather forecast is too bad, we will look to reschedule. Otherwise, we plan to see you on Sunday in Cartersville.
