Even with all the resources at Solomon's disposal, there's no way he could have competed with today's plethora of entertainment options. Today thousands of musicians, actors and athletes are all at our beck and call (through the remote control).

Middle class people today live far better than most kings throughout history. So maybe we should take another look at the warnings in the Bible addressed to the rich (such as Matthew 6:19-21 Matthew 6:19-21 [19] Lay not up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust does corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: [20] But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust does corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: [21] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

; 18:24; 1 Timothy 6:9-10 1 Timothy 6:9-10 [9] But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. [10] For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Consider James 5:1-6 James 5:1-6 [1] Go to now, you rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come on you. [2] Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. [3] Your gold and silver is corroded; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. You have heaped treasure together for the last days. [4] Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, cries: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. [5] You have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; you have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. [6] You have condemned and killed the just; and he does not resist you.

. Though James knew that gold and silver do not rust, he used descriptive phrases to show how quickly the wealth we trust spoils and corrodes, and how it can corrode our character if we let it.
