Middle class people today live far better than most kings throughout history. So maybe we should take another look at the warnings in the Bible addressed to the rich (such as Matthew 6:19-21, 24; Luke 6:24; 18:24; 1 Timothy 6:9-10; Revelation 3:17).
Consider James 5:1-6. Though James knew that gold and silver do not rust, he used descriptive phrases to show how quickly the wealth we trust spoils and corrodes, and how it can corrode our character if we let it.
