A Good Eye

My eye doctor recently administered my annual vision checkup. Thankfully, other than the nearsightedness which I have had since childhood, he found no problems with my eyes, like glaucoma or cataracts. I can see quite well with corrective lenses. Healthy eyesight is a blessing; and as with any part of our health, we want to keep it.

We also want to keep our spiritual eyesight healthy. What we see with our spiritual eyes affects everything in our lives. It is as when Jesus said, "The lamp of the body is the eye...when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light (Luke 11:34). That which comes into our mind filters through the lens of our spiritual eyes. We want to have clear, unobstructed vision to see the truth of God's word. With a good eye, your understanding of His truth will grow, and you will be "full of light."

You do not want something clouding your spiritual vision, like cataracts, for "when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness" (same verse). For instance, you cannot let resentment or selfish desire influence what you see, inviting evil thoughts into your heart. If you let yourself be deceived by what you see with your spiritual eyes, that is darkness. Christ says, "take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness" (Luke 11:35). If your eye is getting bad, He counsels you to "anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see" (Revelation 3:18). For when your eye is good, "your whole body is full of light, having no part dark (Luke 11:36).

To keep your eye good, ask God for the right spiritual vision. Be like the psalmist who prayed, "Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law" (Psalms 119:18). When God opens your mind to His truth, keep your focus on it. Thank Him for this understanding, knowing that you once walked in "darkness, but now you are light in the Lord" (Ephesians 5:8). God miraculously enabled you to see, for as Jesus said, "I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see" (John 9:39). With a good eye, you will follow Him and "not walk in darkness, but have the light of life" (John 8:12)!

Keep your spiritual eyesight healthy; do not let anything cloud or obstruct your vision. And may "the eyes of your understanding" be enlightened, "that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints" (Ephesians 1:18)!

Warm regards,

Andy
