Light in the Darkness
While we enjoy the long days of summer, there is a growing darkness in the world. It is not the darkness of the night, or of days without sun. It is the darkness of evil, deception and confusion. We see the growing darkness in the way our world is changing. Behaviors and attitudes are changing as "evil men ...grow worse and worse" (2 Timothy 3:13). It is sad to see, but we know this is what must happen. Before the time of the end, we know the minds of men will continue to darken to all truth.
Yet, these are exciting times to be a Christian, because as the world grows darker, we can shine brighter. We are going to have greater opportunities to fulfill Christ's mission for His Church. Thank God that He called us out of this world. "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord" (Ephesians 5:8). Our mission now is to tell the world what we see, showing the light of truth by our word and example. God calls us in this age to "shine as lights in the world" (Philippians 2:15).
Jesus came to show us the light of God's truth. He said, "I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness" (John 12:46). But though that "light has come into the world...men loved darkness rather than light" (John 3:19). And, just as it was when Christ walked the earth in the days of His flesh, the world does not understand our message today. For though "the light shines in the darkness...the darkness does not comprehend it" (John 1:5). The world's behavior echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah, "We look for light, but there is darkness! For brightness, but we walk in blackness!" (Isaiah 59:9).
As the darkness in the world grows, Christ wants us to show the world that there is a better way. This is our time to shine! Though the world does not listen now, it will one day know that the light of truth was in us. The world will one day know that God always gave a witness of His truth. Today, that witness is us, for "You are the light of the world" (Matthew 5:14). So, brethren, "Let your light so shine before men" (Matthew 5:16)! Be a light in this world because you have "the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world" (John 1:9).
