Letter From Dan Preston

December 13, 2019

Good evening brethren and Happy Sabbath!  Last week's memory verse was John 14:26 (NKJV), "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you." Watch therefore, below, for clues to this week's memory verse!

A watched pot

You've heard the old saying, 'A watched pot never boils.'  This refers to someone eagerly anticipating a pot of water to boil, perhaps to make tea.  While the water does eventually begin to boil, if we sit and wait intently, watching the pot full of water, it seems to take much longer than it actually does.

A watched delivery

In a modern world, we might apply this analogy to America's favorite pastime: shopping online!  Not long ago, I purchased an item online that had guaranteed next-day delivery. The next day, I dutifully watched with eager anticipation of delivery of my item.  On and on the day went, with me frequently checking the front door and mailbox to see if I had missed the delivery service pulling up.

Alas, I had not, and received a notification that evening that my item was going to be delayed a day in shipping due to 'unforeseen circumstances.'  How could I be expected to endure such torture! Instead of 24 hours, I must wait 48 hours for my delivery. Oh the humanity!!!

I went on to bed that night, and the next day, got up bright and early for a day full of visits.  When I finally arrived home after dark that night, my package - which I had nearly forgotten about - was waiting for me on my front door stoop.

It's when you least expect it

This whole scenario certainly brought home the old adage about 'the watched pot.'  But it got me to thinking about a spiritual lesson as well. Sometimes, we get distracted by our busy lives, and forget about things we once eagerly watched for.

We should always be on alert for the most important that will ever happen for mankind - the return of Jesus Christ!  We don't know when this wonderful event will occur, but we know it will. Our job now is to not lose focus, and watch for that soon coming hour!
