Letter From Dan Preston

December 14, 2018

Good evening brethren and happy Sabbath!

When I was a kid...

I had a very unimpressive 4 door sedan as my first car.  It was a 6 cylinder, automatic and was brown with tan interior.  It was about as uninspiring a vehicle to look at as you could imagine.  However, it was my trusty steed and got me all the way through high school.  Well, almost... Then came the frosty cold morning when the fuel lines froze up and I drained the battery trying to get it started.  Fortunately for me, school wound up being canceled that day and I was saved the embarrassment of having to ride the bus.

Normally, I probably wouldn't have been that upset about it, if it weren't for the fact that I had spent top dollar the day before to buy premium fuel at a gas station that guaranteed their fuel wouldn't freeze.  When I went to the gas station to get my money back, I was told to 'call corporate.' I did.  It's been 24 years and I'm still waiting for them to call me back...

What kind of guarantee was that again?

I quickly learned that there were few guarantees in life you could count on when it comes to automobiles.  Batteries guaranteed to work at 20 below are usually good down to about 0, tires guaranteed for 40,000 miles rarely make it much past 30,000 and fuel guaranteed not to freeze, does. I'm reminded of Psalm 20:7 (NKJV), "Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the Lord our God."

David pointed out that the instruments of war and transportation of his time were not perfect.  Even though God created horses, they were physical, and would fail in time.  The truth David had come to learn over a period of time was that there was really only one thing in life you could count on...

More than the name

Of course, we understand that it is more than just the name of the Lord that will last.  When Mary was being told she would give birth to Jesus, in Luke 1:33, the angel said, "And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end."  People won't just remember the Lord's name.  It and all that it stands for will endure forever!

Cars will come and go (I have honestly lost count of how many I've had).  But there is one guarantee we can count on forever: the name, the presence, the love and the Kingdom of God!
