Letter From Dan Preston

June 5, 2020

Good evening brethren and Happy Sabbath!  Last week's memory verse was Jeremiah 31:33 (NKJV), "But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people." Read below to see if you can pick some clues out of the text for this week's memory verse!

Civil unrest

In addition to the tension over COVID-19, this week saw civil unrest over the death of George Floyd.  Reactions occurred in virtually every major city of the US, from peaceful gatherings of solidarity to vandalism, looting and unfortunately, even more deaths.

Why?

This is the question that many have asked, in one form or another.  Why did Mr. Floyd die?  Why did the police use the measures they did?  Why are people burning down their own cities?  Why can't we all just get along? A thousand different questions, all starting with the same word - Why?

These are all fair questions, and questions that need to be answered.  The difficult part is that most of humanity does not have the answer.  Some claim to, but when those answers are examined under a Biblical light, they often don't hold up.  Unfortunately, most of humanity can't see what is really happening.  And when one person who can't see tries to lead others, they often both fall into the ditch.

The answer

As people who have been given God's Holy Spirit, you and I should be able to answer this very fundamental question of - Why?  Why are there evil thoughts in the world?  Why is their theft, murder and lying in our world?  The answer is, it comes from the human heart.

The death of George Floyd is a tragedy.  The deaths of those during the riots is a tragedy.  All death and evil is a tragedy.  And even though we may understand that all these issues stem from the human heart, we await the time when all mankind will share in this understanding and receive the answers they need at the return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
