Letter From Dan Preston

October 26, 2018

Good Sabbath evening to everyone!

Looking forward to it

As I sit writing this letter, I must tell you how excited I am about tomorrow's post-Feast social!  While the social will be held in Charlotte, I hope everyone takes a moment tonight and tomorrow to look back and think about some special Feast of Tabernacles memories!

What is a 'White Elephant gift' anyway?

While the origin of the term may be more legend than fact ,the basic idea of a White Elephant gift in today's society is that it is something of little or ordinary value.  It could be a small knick-knack from around the house, and ugly necktie, or something that most people already have, such as toothbrush.  The purpose is more in entertainment and speculation of what the gift might be before opening it, and the subsequent 'trading' of gifts with others before the big reveal at the end to see what it actually is.

Once the gifts have been exchanged and everyone has had a good laugh, feel free to exchange it with someone if they would like to trade.  Or perhaps take it home and set it on your shelf and let it bring a smile to your face every time you think of how you got it. Even if you decide not to keep it at all, you will always have the memories of the time you spent with your brothers and sisters!

The real gift

In the end, it's just a reason for us all to gather and talk about our Feast experiences as we have a good time together, and that is the real gift!  Of course, it's not just about having a good time, being together with brethren of like mind will help encourage our spiritual growth. Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV) reminds us, "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching."

As you get ready for tomorrow, put some thought into what might be a fun and funny gift for someone else to receive.  And be ready to share, laugh and grow closer together with fellow members of the Body of Christ!
