Early in Christ's ministry, He was visited by Nicodemus, a Pharisee and likely a member of the Sanhedrin who by reputation appears to have been a great teacher. He was puzzled when Jesus told him he must be "born again"—something he misunderstood and which most people misunderstand today. We examine exactly what Jesus meant by those words and what they mean for us. We also discuss a Remez from Jesus referring back to an incident from Israel's 40 years in the wilderness, and cover in detail the significance of what is perhaps the Bible's best-known passage—"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."

Scott Ashley is managing editor of Beyond Today magazine, United Church of God booklets and its printed Bible Study Course. He and his wife, Connie, live near Denver, Colorado. 
Mr. Ashley attended Ambassador College in Big Sandy, Texas, graduating in 1976 with a theology major and minors in journalism and speech. It was there that he first became interested in publishing, an industry in which he has worked for 50 years.
