God is rich in mercy. He wants us to be that way too. Showing mercy to others is actually a requirement for God to show mercy to us. Mercy is the fifth of the vital seven Beatitudes Christ gave His disciples in His first recorded formal teaching at the beginning of His Sermon On The Mount. "Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy" (Matthew 5:7). During war, like World War II, you do not expect a lot of mercy to be shown. But one caring pilot showed extraordinary mercy to the enemy that services as an excellent example for us yet today.
