Pastor Bart Bornhorst gives a message about the importance of assembling for Sabbath services. We can be distracted while living in a wealthy country causing us to fall into a spiritual strap.

Sermon Notes

We live in one of the wealthiest countries in the world.  The poorest of the country are doing much better than the rest of the world.  We are very blessed to be living in the United States.  On the surface, we seem to be living well.  In reality, our wealth can be a spiritual detriment.  When life is easy, human nature doesn’t see and feel the need for God.

God knew it would be a spiritual trap.

Deut. 8:6 → A lot of natural wealth is promised as God led his people to the promised land.

Be careful that you don’t forget God.  Our country is blessed because of God’s covenant to our forefathers.  But, these physical blessing are a trap.

What percentage of people attend church in the USA?  About 40% say they attend, but fewer than 20% say they attend.  More than 4000 church close their doors every year.  After 9/11 church attendance spiked, but then decreased.

Human nature is motivated by need.  When human nature is comfortable and relaxed, it is easy to turn away from God.

Why is it important to gather on the Sabbath.

1.)  Our assembly is commanded

Matthew 16:18 Matthew 16:18And I say also to you, That you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
American King James Version×
→ Ecclesia - Our church.  Christ says He will call out those to assmble there.

Acts 19:32 Acts 19:32Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused: and the more part knew not why they were come together.
American King James Version×

James 2:

Matthew 23:37 Matthew 23:37O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets, and stone them which are sent to you, how often would I have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and you would not!
American King James Version×
→ God wants to gather his children as a hen gathers her chicks.

Leviticus 23:3 Leviticus 23:3Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; you shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.
American King James Version×
→ Sabbath is a holy convocation.

2.)  Christ and our Spiritual forefathers set the example

Mark 1:21 Mark 1:21And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught.
American King James Version×

Mark 6:2 Mark 6:2And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From where has this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given to him, that even such mighty works are worked by his hands?
American King James Version×
→ He began to teach on the Sabbath.

Luke 13:10 Luke 13:10And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.
American King James Version×

Luke 4:16-20 Luke 4:16-20 [16] And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. [17] And there was delivered to him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, [18] The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, [19] To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. [20] And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
American King James Version×

Acts 2:1 Acts 2:1And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
American King James Version×
→ On Pentecost, they were all together in one place.

Acts 13:13 Acts 13:13Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem.
American King James Version×

Acts 17:

Why did Paul go to the synagogue every Sabbath day?

1 Corinthians 11:1 1 Corinthians 11:1Be you followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
American King James Version×

3.)  For encouragement and fellowship (3:46)

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 [3] Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; [4] Who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted of God.
American King James Version×
→ Blessed be the God of comfort and mercies that we may be able to comfort those as well.  The spirit of God dwells in each of us.

Galatians 6:2 Galatians 6:2Bear you one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
American King James Version×
→ Bear one another burdens.

Many look to services and a bright spot in their week.  Come to services looking to build the love with one another.

We should remember the shut-ins and put them on a schedule.  What is pure, sincere worship of God.

James 1:26-27 James 1:26-27 [26] If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridles not his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is vain. [27] Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
American King James Version×
→ When we come together, do we control our tongue?  We need to bridle your tongue.  We are to visit orphans and widows in trouble.

Do we see and feel the need to come here on the Sabbath day?   We need each other.

Matthew 18:20 Matthew 18:20For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the middle of them.
American King James Version×
→ Where 2 or 3 are gathered in my  Name, I am with them.

Hebrews 10:24-25 Hebrews 10:24-25 [24] And let us consider one another to provoke to love and to good works: [25] Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as you see the day approaching.
American King James Version×
Think of ways to motivate each other to acts of love and good works.
