God's stationing of cherubim before the Tree of Life (Gen.3:22-24), though possibly literal (as far as it goes), was ultimately, it seems, symbolic. For the Bible consistently reveals that the barrier to what this tree represents is actually something in man himself. Ironically, as human beings yearn to know if there is a God and a purpose to human life, they -- both atheists and theists alike -- are unwittingly possessed of a deep-seated, unshakeable hostility toward God and His way to eternal life that is sufficient to prevent their access to that knowledge, that is, until it is removed by God. It is something we need to understand and never forget. In the following brief message, titled "The Impassable Barrier," we will scratch the surface of this most fundamental, yet elusive, biblical subject.
