Bayocean, Oregon was a booming resort town on its way to becoming the West coast version of Atlantic City. However, the developer and its early residents didn't take into account the fickle and capricious nature of the Pacific Ocean. Situated at the tip of the Tillamook Spit - the town began with a large hotel, natatorium, and a number of other amenities, but while the construction of the Barview Jetty tamed the surface conditions in order to enter the Tillamook Bay, it caused a shift in the current which began to slowly erode away the spit until eventually the hotel, natatorium, and all of the houses of Bayocean were reclaimed by the Pacific. Today, nothing remains of Bayocean but a legend. When we consider our spiritual lives, and the house which we've built - we recognize the importance of building on the rock - but is it possible that through our own negligence, or rebelliousness that we can allow the slow erosion of that foundation? Not from the big storms which come along occasionally in life, but from the day to day wave action and erosive forces of simply enduring? Is it possible that we might lose that foundation little by little until a big storm comes along and exposes the cracks and missing chunks and our house is in danger of falling into the depths? What can we learn from Bayocean, Oregon, The Town That Fell Into The Sea?
