Many people believe Peter was the first pope of the Catholic Church, and was the head of the apostles. A number of Church of God organizations believe Church government is required to have one man at the top. What did Christ really say in Matthew 16:18-19? In this message we’ll see who the rock (Petra) really is, and we’ll also let the bible tell us how the apostles worked as peers and as a team (with no man as the head) to preach the gospel and establish the New Testament Church of God.

Could it be that Mat 16:18 is referring back to verse 16? Is Christ stating in verse 18 that Peter in recognizing who Christ is should not get puffed up because God has revealed this to him since he is only a pebble ( a man) not the Rock, but only a man? Could Christ be referring back to verse 16 that the fact that He is the Rock (Petra) and on that fact He will build His church?
