All over this planet, there are many traditions and teachings about what God is like. Is there a way to know the facts, a way to know the truth of this matter?

Sermon Notes

A Partial set of notes and Scriptures:

What is God like? What do we picture Him like? Greeks, Egyptians, Babylonian views and visions.

Exodus 20:4  "You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;
Exodus 20:5  you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
Exodus 20:6  but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

How do we perceive God and how do we relate. Idols are an abomination that can never represent God.

How does He want us to understand Him?

Any representation of Him distorts reality and damages our perception of Him.

Our growth is a work in progress toward the spiritual mold of eternity.

Genesis 5:1  This is the book of the genealogy of Adam. In the day that God created man, He made him in the likeness of God.
Genesis 5:2  He created them male and female, and blessed them and called them Mankind in the day they were created.

We are here to become part of the family of God and become just like our elder Brother.  Much to do before we get there.

What can we know what God is really like and what we will become?

He is described throughout the Scriptures in some detail.
Ezekiel 1:26  And above the firmament over their heads was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like a sapphire stone; on the likeness of the throne was a likeness with the appearance of a man high above it.
Ezekiel 1:27  Also from the appearance of His waist and upward I saw, as it were, the color of amber with the appearance of fire all around within it; and from the appearance of His waist and downward I saw, as it were, the appearance of fire with brightness all around.
Ezekiel 1:28  Like the appearance of a rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the brightness all around it. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. So when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard a voice of One speaking.

Ezekiel is trying to describe what he saw.

Revelation 4:2  Immediately I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne.
Revelation 4:3  And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald.

Isaiah 60:19  "The sun shall no longer be your light by day, Nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you, But the LORD will be to you an everlasting light, And your God your glory.

James 1:17  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

Revelation 1:12  Then I turned to see the voice that spoke to me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands,
Revelation 1:13  and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band.
Revelation 1:14  His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire;
Revelation 1:15  His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters;
Revelation 1:16  He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength.

Elohim = Strong one, Divine One
Adonai
El Elion
El Roi
El Shaddai
El Eliom = Everlasting, no beginning, no end
Yahweh = I AM, self-existing, permanent, eternal

What He is like what we are to be like.

1 - God is holy.  This is a hard term today. Separated from all moral defilement and with hostility for it.

Isa 6:3  And one cried to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!"

Holy is serious business with God!

Habakkuk 1:13  You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, And cannot look on wickedness. Why do You look on those who deal treacherously, And hold Your tongue when the wicked devours A person more righteous than he?

Is this how we are, pure eyes and find it repugnant to contemplate evil? What happened in Nice is pure evil...

Are we consistent, portraying and becoming like God, Holy as He is Holy, with pure eyes.

Philippians 4:8  Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

Leviticus 11:44

1 Peter 1:15  but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,
1 Peter 1:16  because it is written, "Be holy, for I am holy."

1 Peter 1:17  And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one's work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear;
1 Peter 1:18  knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers,
1 Peter 1:19  but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

Exodus 34:6  And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, "The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth,
Exodus 34:7  keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children's children to the third and the fourth generation."

We too must become longsuffering... gracious with people, patiently enduring while we wait for them to grow up...

Colossians 4
Colossians 4:5  Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.

Colossians 4:6  Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

What do people outside the Church see when they see you???

What is God doing in your life? Are you truly the light in your neighborhood?
{{Grace: 1. charis (G5485) has various uses, (a) objective, that which bestows or occasions pleasure, delight, or causes favorable regard; it is applied, e.g., to beauty, or gracefulness of person, Luke 2:40; act, 2 Corinthians 8:6, or speech, Luke 4:22, RV, "words of grace" (KJV, "gracious words"); Colossians 4:6; (b) subjective, (1) on the part of the bestower, the friendly disposition from which the kindly act proceeds, graciousness, loving-kindness, goodwill generally, e.g., Act 7:10; especially with reference to the divine favor or "grace," e.g., Act 14:26; in this respect there is stress on its freeness and universality, its spontaneous character, as in the case of God's redemptive mercy, and the pleasure or joy He designs for the recipient; thus it is set in contrast with debt, Romans 4:4, Romans 4:16, with works, Romans 11:6, and with law, John 1:17; see also, e.g., Romans 6:14, Romans 6:15; Romans 5:4; (2) on the part of the receiver, a sense of the favor bestowed, a feeling of gratitude, e.g., Romans 6:17 ("thanks"); in this respect it sometimes signifies "to be thankful," e.g., Luke 17:9 ("doth he thank the servant?" lit., "hath he thanks to"); 1 Timothy 1:12; (c) in another objective sense, the effect of "grace," the spiritual state of those who have experienced its exercise, whether (1) a state of "grace," e.g., Romans 5:2; 1 Peter 5:12; 2 Peter 3:18, or (2) a proof thereof in practical effects, deeds of "grace," e.g., 1 Corinthians 16:3, RV, "bounty" (KJV, "liberality"); 2Co_8:6, 2 Corinthians 8:19 (in 2 Corinthians 9:8 it means the sum of earthly blessings); the power and equipment for ministry, e.g., Romans 1:5; Romans 12:6; Romans 15:15; 1 Corinthians 3:10; Galatians 2:9; Ephesians 3:2, Ephesians 3:7. }}

JUSTICE...

Matthew 23:23  "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.
Matthew 23:24  Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

4 -  God is Righteous!

Righteousness formerly spelled RightWiseness ...

Romans 3:5  But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unjust who inflicts wrath? (I speak as a man.)
Romans 3:26  to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
To enable us to be righteous, as He is.

1. dikaiosune (G1343) is "the character or quality of being right or just"; it was formerly spelled "rightwiseness," which clearly expresses the meaning. It is used to denote an attribute of God, e.g., Romans 3:5, the context of which shows that "the righteousness of God" means essentially the same as His faithfulness, or truthfulness, that which is consistent with His own nature and promises.

2 Corinthians 10:5  casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,
2 Corinthians 10:6  and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

5 - God is Immutable. He does not change. He absolutely reliable and trustworthy

Numbers 23:19, "God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?

Repent

nacham (H5162), "to repent, comfort." Nacham apparently means "to repent" about 40 times and "to comfort" about 65 times in the Old Testament. Scholars assert several views in trying to ascertain the meaning of nacham by connecting the word to a change of the heart or disposition, a change of mind, a change of purpose, or an emphasis upon the change of one's conduct.
James 1:17  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
James 1:18  Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.
James 1:19  So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;
James 1:20  for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

Psalms 15:4  In whose eyes a vile person is despised, But he honors those who fear the LORD; He who swears to his own hurt and does not change;
Psalms 15:5  He who does not put out his money at usury, Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be moved.

Thus: Be A PERSON OF YOUR WORD and KEEP YOUR PROMISES, be and live in the INTEGRITY to your word.

6 - God is PERFECT.

We are in an age of "almost good enough"  is good enough !!!
OFFERING 2nd best is NOT what HE wants... ask Cain.

Psalms 18:30  As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the LORD is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him.
James 1:2  My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,
James 1:3  knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.
James 1:4  But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

Matthew 5:48  Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

7 - GOD IS A FAMILY.  The concept almost unique to the Church of God.  This is WHY YOU ARE here, to become a part of His very OWN family
Ephesians 3:14  For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Ephesians 3:15  from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

Colossians 1:18  And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
Colossians 1:19  For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell,
Colossians 1:20  and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.

Romans 8:29  For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Romans 8:30  Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

Have we seen Jesus Christ from the pages of the Bible into the thinking, speaking, and actions of each other?

John 17:20  "I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word;
John 17:21  that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.
John 17:22  And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one:
John 17:23  I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.

John 1:10  He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
John 1:11  He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
John 1:12  But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
John 1:13  who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 13:34  A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
John 13:35  By this all will know that you are My disciples if you have love for one another."

1 Corinthians 15:50  Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption.
1 Corinthians 15:51  Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—
1 Corinthians 15:52  in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
1 Corinthians 15:53  For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
1 Corinthians 15:54  So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP IN VICTORY."
1 Corinthians 15:55  "O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING? O HADES, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY?"

1 John 3:2  Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.
1 John 3:3  And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
