Newspapers printed on paper were not free, so free Internet news isn't a reasonable alternative. News is big business, and it must have an outlet for making income.

Recently it was announced that Rupert Murdoch, head of News Corp. (which owns many newspapers), and Steve Jobs, head of Apple, have created an e-reader-friendly newspaper called The Daily. It will be the world's first all-digital, subscription-only newspaper without a print or Web edition (Edward Helmore, "Rupert Murdoch Creates 'iNewspaper'—With the Help of Steve Jobs," Guardian.co.uk, Nov. 21, 2010).

"When one goes, they all go," as the saying goes. If The Daily is successful, it's likely that more newspapers will follow Murdoch's lead.
