Truth is usually the first casualty in any political campaign. How do you discern and come to the real truth of a subject?

[Darris McNeely] In America, we are in the midst of another presidential campaign. I've been watching the debates that have been going on this fall prior to next month's election. And as in every type of political debate - presidential, local, state, whatever it may be - there are always major issues that are being discussed and both candidates have particular points of view on those issues. And what has struck me this year is just how hard it is to get to the truth of a matter and of a particular issue. When I see that one candidate points a finger on stage at another and says that, "What he is saying is not true," then I have to raise the question, just what is going on here and I wonder what is truth and how do we get to it?

[Steve Myers] Boy, it's become a difficult situation in our world today because the truth is hard to find. It's hard to find the facts of the matter that are given to us in a straightforward way. There's no doubt when we hear these political things, we always hear about the spin that all sides begin to have. So where is it that you really find truth? What is truth when you really get down to it?

[Darris McNeely] You know, after listening to the most recent presidential debate and having one candidate point his finger at the other and say that, "What he said is not true," it really made me stop and think about the matter of honor, the matter of character that is - should be upon anyone and anyone of us in any of our dealings to be able to speak truth, come to the truth, and to be able to demonstrate it and live a true life.

[Steve Myers] Yeah, if we're supposed to be Christians that better be who we are. We better be standing for truth.

[Darris McNeely] The one Scripture that came to my mind was in Psalm 15 beginning in verse 1 where it says, "Lord, who may abide in Your tabernacle and who may dwell in Your holy hill?" Verse 2 says, "He who walks uprightly and works righteousness and speaks the truth in his heart" Psalm 15:2, speaking the truth in your heart (Psalm 15:1-2). I think if everyone of us made the decision that we will live a true life, we will think true thoughts, and we will speak the truth in our heart, what comes out of our mouth, what comes out in our life then is going to be closer to the truth, an unassailable truth, that cannot be spoken against.

[Steve Myers] If we're going to take the name of Christ, if we claim to be Christians we claim to follow Him. And 1 Peter says that how we have to be. We have to be represented by truth because it says about Jesus Christ in 1 Peter 2:22, "No deceit was found in His mouth." That's talking about truth, that He didn't spin the truth. He didn't manipulate the truth. He didn't shade the truth. He was straightforward and He was truth - He represented truth. So, if we're following Christ, then we better do that as well. We better be followers of the truth and speaking the truth, not deceitful in any way.

[Darris McNeely] I think it's important that anyone of us, no matter what particular political campaign, or speech, or debate we may be following or watching to really take the glasses off and look honestly at what is being said and done at various times and learn a lesson to come to truth, to speak truth in our own lives, and avoid the spin. Avoid hiding. Come out, be open, live an open life, but find the truth and come to understand what is truth in every part of our life.

[Steve Myers] Our life becomes truth and we speak the truth in love. So that's BT Daily. We'll see you next time.
