What source becomes the standard for all truth?

Transcript

[Steve Myers] The presidential race is the talk of the day here in America as the debates are occurring. Now one of the challenges that have come up, especially in this last debate, is what is truth? We wrote that on the board as we begin to discuss that, especially for us. We're apolitical. We're striving to live by the word of God and so as we watch these things happen and we hear everybody's take on this issue and that issue and everybody seems to have the truth, or claim that they have the truth, and yet there are so many versions of the truth. So in our Christian - as a Christian life, we've got to ask ourselves, are we living the truth? Are we representatives of the truth in our lives?

[Darris McNeely] Now we're talking a little bit about partisan politics and regardless of what nations' politics we're talking about, politics by its very nature is going to present a particular point of view of a group of people, a class, or a party, and of course in the realm of human government and affairs, people are going to slant issues and matters and even certain incidents that are plain factual to a particular truth that is their truth. And again as a Christian and from a biblical point of view to come to answer the question of what is truth, to speak truth from the heart, and to speak the truth of God, we've got to always understand what the basic foundation, starting point of truth is and that's the word of God.

[Steve Myers] It is and that passage in 1 Peter 2:22 speaks to that, that we can't shade the truth in our own lives. And it comes to the fact we've got to be honest with ourselves. Are we living up to the standard of truth in our lives, when it comes to the truth of the word of God? Because that's our goal. It doesn't matter what's happening in the political world. If we don't turn that around and look at our own selves and realize how sometimes we do shade the truth. Sometimes we are deceitful with ourselves. You know, we're supposed to strive to be more like our Heavenly Father and put on the mind of Christ. And so, are we doing that? We can ask ourselves that during this political season if we really are.

[Darris McNeely] The standard of God's word should be the truth by which we think, speak, and by what we live. John 17:17 says, "Thy word is truth." Jesus uttered those words and that is really the benchmark standard that we have to take as we learn to speak truth from the heart.

[Steve Myers] It has to be. Thy word is truth. So then the question becomes, is that truth obvious in my life? Am I shading the truth of God? Or am I striving to be perfect like my Heavenly Father is perfect? That's our goal.

[Darris McNeely] And make sure that whatever political season you may be in, whatever candidate you may be interested in, following, that you don't get sucked into the partisan nature of human politics. Distance yourself, stand back, look at the word of God, judge, evaluate, and discern what is being said, what is being put forth, and how issues, matters are being presented by what is known to be factual, but most of all, what is the standard of God's word, the truth of the Bible.

[Steve Myers] Remember who our King is. That's who we're under. That's BT Daily. We'll see you next time.
