[Darris McNeely] If a person does not accept Jesus Christ now, will they have another chance at salvation? A Beyond Today viewer wrote us that question after yesterday's Beyond Today program, "Moving Beyond Tragedy ," where we showed the hope of the resurrection, the fact that even small children who die through tragic circumstances will have the hope of the resurrection, will come to understand God's plan of salvation. Steve, people who ask that type of question, because we had a Beyond Today viewer write that into us, don't really understand and put together all the Scriptures on that subject.
[Steve Myers] Well, the hard part is that there's so much false teaching out there when it comes to when are people saved. And now is not the only day of salvation. The Bible, when you put all of the passages together, shows that today is not the only day, that God is love and wants all to come to repentance and have that opportunity to understand His way and come to know Him.
[Darris McNeely] Scripture does very clearly show that Christ is the door to salvation; it is in His name only that one is saved, but look at just a few examples of Scripture where Jesus Himself did talk about this subject. In Matthew chapter 12, He was talking about the peoples of Nineveh and Sodom and saying that these thoroughly pagan and sinful people will be treated very mercifully in a coming day of judgment (Matthew 12:41The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
See All...). He spoke very highly, or their opportunity, to have a chance to repent and to understand and come to know God when they didn't in that, in their lifetime. So, that one Scripture alone brings out the hope once again, just like we were talking about in our program "Moving Beyond Tragedy ."
[Steve Myers] Right, well it's a dilemma if you think that just because you were born in a country that never had knowledge of Jesus Christ, that you never heard the name of Jesus, that you're lost. But that's not the case. God compares various generations coming up in a resurrection to physical life where they'll have an opportunity to understand God. They'll have that chance to know Him and to honor Him and to love Him.
[Darris McNeely] One other Scripture, Matthew chapter 13, the parable of the sower and seed, where Jesus Himself said that the masses were not able to understand the mysteries of the Kingdom of God. It was not given to them to understand. It was by His deliberate design as He spoke the parables, but there's going to be coming a time, as we showed in our program, where people will understand the mysteries of the Kingdom of God for the first time and get their one chance for salvation (Matthew 13:1-9 [1] The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side.
[2] And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.
[3] And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;
[4] And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:
[5] Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:
[6] And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.
[7] And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:
[8] But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.
[9] Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
See All... and Matthew 13:18-23 [18] Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.
[19] When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
[20] But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;
[21] Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.
[22] He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
[23] But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
See All...).
[Steve Myers] They'll have that opportunity. What a wonderful day that will be. That God, God really is love and not a respecter of persons and He cares for you. It's a big subject so there's much to know about it. So get some extra information. We've got some Bible aides to help you out so check out our website for more.
[Darris McNeely] And stop operating under the assumption that today is the only day of salvation and that if a person does not accept Jesus Christ today, in their life, that they've had their only chance. That's just not true. Everyone gets one chance. It's important to understand what that chance is and to accept it when it does come.
[Steve Myers] That's BT Daily . We'll see you tomorrow.
In view of were we find ourselves in this present life span, we need to help folks understand that the earth is almost full of the knowledge of Jehovah God & His Son Jesus Christ.
Matthew 24:14 This gospel of the Kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
It is important that people young & old know that if you turn away from Jehovah God when He is calling to you, or knocking on your door as some would call this, Christ will not let this slide & we will be held accountable for turning away.
We must alert people of the danger their in by just thinking they can wait till the new system of things arrives and see how it goes for them at that time.
The above article states: ..."In Matthew chapter 12, He was talking about the peoples of Nineveh and Sodom and saying that these thoroughly pagan and sinful people will be treated very mercifully in a coming day of judgment (Matthew:12:41)"...
My question: Where in Matthew 12:41 does it say, or for that matter, anyplace in context around Matthew 12:41, does the Bible say this verse is talking about Nineveh AND SODOM? I do not find references to Sodom in the entire chapter nor the chapter before or after Matthew 12? I understand what is being said in regard to Nineveh, but the point that was being sought in the article about this verse speaking about those in Nineveh and Sodom having another chance or being spoken highly of by Jesus, just isn't there. Please help me understand what you're trying to say. Was this verse mistakenly quoted? Should there be a correction. The other 2 Matthew verses from Ch 13 about the parable of the sower don't even show what your trying to point out here -- that Jesus spoke about "second chances".
I'm not trying to argue, I genuinely am searching for the truth on this matter and thought I'd find it here. So far, I am not convinced by the scriptures quoted and the points made.
Regarding Red's comment: "Read acts 2:36-38 for a Biblical example of salvation, inquire to act on it asap don't wait til its too late."
-- Acts 2. that you referenced, does NOT say that this is a one time event/chance, but it does not say that isn't, either. As we study the Bible and read G-d's own words, we have to be careful NOT to let our own beliefs and biases and thoughts and wishes TAINT or COLOR what we're reading. It isn't about OUR OPINIONS, but rather about what the Creator of us says.
Prairie,
I believe Sodom was mentioned referencing another scripture along with Matthew 12:41.
Matthew 10:15 "Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city."
Both scriptures talk about the same point- that these men will have another chance in the resurrection. Jesus says that, in the day of judgement, it will be MORE tolerable for the people of Sodom, Gomorrah or Nineveh than for the people of His generation. This is because the people of those cities didn't have the opportunity to hear Christ's teachings like those people living during Christ's time. The people of Christ's time had a far greater opportunity than those that lived before. This is why Christ says it will be MORE tolerable for those of Sodom, Gomorrah, and Nineveh than those of His time. And, in order for the day of judgement to be MORE tolerable for one as compared to the other, BOTH groups have to be present in the day of judgement. This is how we know that there will be a resurrection when both these groups of people will be able to correctly know Christ. But, as Christ said, people of Nineveh who never knew Him could look down on those people who already lived with and rejected Him.
With regards to the parable of the sower, the point I see trying to be made is that it is not, now, the time for everyone to understand Christ's message and be saved by living His way. The disciples asked Christ in Matt 13:10 why He spoke to the people in parables. His answer in verse 11 is that it was given to some people, including the disciples, the ability to understand His message but NOT to all people. They don't understand. This is what Christ says in verse 13 of ch 13 "seeing they do not see and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand." Not everyone can understand Christ's message and have the opportunity for salvation in this life. So we know that their time to have the understanding will come in the resurrection.
