Are we able to sleep when the wind blows?

The story is told of a young man applied for a job as a farmhand, and when the old farmer asked for his qualifications, he replied with an air of confidence, "I can sleep when the wind blows." The statement puzzled the farmer. But he liked the pleasant looking young man nevertheless and hired him.

A few days later, the old farmer and his wife were rudely awakened in the night by a violent storm. They quickly began to check things out to see if all was secure. They found that the shutters of the farmhouse had been securely fastened. A good supply of logs had been set next to the fireplace. The farm tools had been placed neatly in the storage shed, safe from the elements. The tractor had been moved into the garage. The barn was properly locked. Even the animals were calm. The young man slept soundly. All was well. The farmer then understood the meaning of the young man's words, "I can sleep when the wind blows."

Because the farmhand did his work loyally and faithfully when the skies were clear, he was prepared for the storm when it broke loose. So when the wind blew, he was fearless. He slept in peace.

Are we able to sleep when the wind blows?  The time to prepare for a storm is before it happens as the story above illustrates.  The same principle applies to our spiritual life – we must prepare beforehand.  Matthew 7:24-27 shows us that we must be obeying and practicing (doing) God’s instruction now so our “house” is not ruined in the storm.  In Matthew 25:1-13 we have the reminder in the parable of the Ten Virgins to make sure our “lamps” are full and trimmed for Christ’s return so we are not on the wrong side of the closed door.

Are we able to sleep when the wind blows?  The storm is coming: governments are in chaos; wars continue unabated; economies are struggling; the weather seems to be increasingly violent; earthquakes are happening in very populated areas; organized religion is adrift and many are deceived – and mankind is powerless to change or stop any of it (Matthew 24:4-13).  God gives us a glimpse of the coming storm because our judgment is now (1 Peter 4:7) and so we can be prepared.  With foreknowledge we can have peace (Psalm 119:165) because we have taken the necessary steps to weather the storm.

Now is the time to draw close to God (James 4:8) and obey Him.  If we do, then we will be able to sleep when the wind blows.
