It does not take long for a person to realize the importance of appearance.
We want others to think well of us, and usually we take a lot of care in our appearance—the things we say and do. We want to leave an impression and be presentable. We also spend time and money on our personal appearance. Our face, hair, body and clothing all consume time every day. There are necessary parts that do need care.
But it is what is inside that really matters. True beauty lies in the time and effort we spend the matters of our heart. Jesus explained that to the leaders of Jerusalem that they were good at cleaning the outside of the cup and dish, but were full of self-indulgence and extortion on the inside (Matthew 23:25-27 [25] Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
[26] Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
[27] Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
