Theories abound, but what is the truth of the “mark of the Beast” in the book of Revelation?

Transcript

[Darris McNeely] Of all the questions in the Book of Revelation about prophecy, perhaps the one about 666, the mark of the beast, that’s probably one that draws more questions for us and a great deal of discussion from this biblical topic. Recently I was talking with a group of people about the Bible. We were discussing various topics, it got around to prophecy and it got to the mark of the beast. And one individual pointed out to me because I had my smartphone in front of me at the time, he said, “This is the mark of the beast. What you’ve got in your hand, your smartphone. They can track you, they can do anything they want with you. They know everything about you and that’s what you’ve got in your hand.” I had to smile and I had to back a little bit away from that comment and then forcefully answer the question for the individual that no, this is not the mark of the beast.

When we look in the Bible we see what we are told about this and look at all the speculation that’s quite fascinating but usually quite wrong about this topic. We have to take that step back in order to gain the understanding we need. In Revelation 13 it talks about these powers of the beast power, this political, religious beast that arise at the…in the age just prior to the return of Jesus Christ, creating tremendous problems and movements of people and events upon the world’s scene. And in verse 16 it talks about this beast, this power that says, “He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads that they…that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast or the number of his name.” And then it says, “Here is wisdom: Let him who is understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. His number is 666.”

There have been many attempts through the years to explain exactly what 666 means and various gyrations are usually taken to attach this to perhaps a personage, some individual. The problem is most people that I’ve read that it’s been attached to and being named as the beast, they usually are dead or wind up passing from the scene and so you can’t say that they…that particular political or figure perhaps is this image of the…is beast, this…holding this mark.

When we look at what the Scripture tells us in the context of the topic of the mark of the beast, we’re looking at a power that certainly is there but we’re talking about its control in an economic sense upon the world and upon individuals. And for you and I, when we stop to think about the entire message of the book of Revelation, how we avoid receiving that mark in our right hand or in our forehead is going to come down to our relationship with God. In chapter 15 there’s another reference to this and it is speaking to those who are in a relationship with God. In verse 2 of chapter 15 of Revelation it says, “As John saw something like a sea of glass mingled with fire and those who have the victory over the beast, over his image and over his mark and over the number of his name standing on the sea of glass having harps of God.” Here are the individuals who have a relationship with God through obedience, through righteousness, through keeping the Commandments of God which the entire context of Revelation really does show us about how it is that we will be able to avoid the implications of what this particular prophetic event is talking about.

I urge you to stay away from the extreme ideas regarding 666 and the mark of the beast. I also urge you to watch Beyond Today television program that we’ve done on the topic that goes into it in far more detail. But above all, stay close to God and don’t worry that you’re going to be caught in that so much as you are worried about your relationship with God and developing a strong, positive relationship there. Do that and you’re not going to have to worry.

Praise the Lord in Heaven! This is an answer to my prayers. It gives me great joy to hear that there are other Christians in the world who recognise what the Mark of the Beast actually is : the Smart phone The original, most common mark is the iPhone symbol - Apple. It's Eve taking a bite out of the forbidden fruit. It is the original sin, in pictographic form. The first Apple Macintosh sold for $666.66. It's a slap in the face, it's right in your face, it's so blatant, but the masses are blind. God has not opened their eyes, or their ears. Even when they're told the truth, they reject it. Smart phones are idols. GOogle takes the place of GOd. Thank God I'm not the only one who can see the truth. Out of the darkness the truth will come to light. Thank you to the Pastor who rejected the truth so that the truth could be told. God bless your soul. Why do you hold the Bible with your left hand and your smart phone with your right hand? But what about the forehead? Research by Abigail Carter concludes the right frontal lobe is shut down when sending texts. What we hold in our hand will affect what goes on in our brains. It's all intertwined.

Hello Danielle, I was informed by your enthusiastic comment! I had not personally thought about the detailed explanation that you shared with all of us. Perhaps Mr. McNeally knew all these details but I did not. I do remember a part of a scripture: "the truth will make you free." This small, simple statement gives me much hope. Where do I find Truth? I find Truth in God's Word, the Bible. Everything needed to pursue (and be given) Eternal Life is found there. But not every detail is explained in plain English (or Hebrew or Greek.) So I try to read and understand the clear, obvious, almost unmistakable directions that God gives us. And I accept that later, if I remain faithful, God (both Father and Son) will continue to show me explanations (and details) that are not completely understood at this time. God is always faithful !! We should make a real effort to be faithful also. 2 Thess 2: 9--12

I'm going to add to my last post. If the internet were shut down right now. It would throw the whole world into utter chaos. You wouldn't be able to buy food or gas. You wouldn't be able to receive medical care. And it would bring on the 4 horseman. When I was in the hospital, the nurse told me, the computers are down, so I can't give you your meds. No one has back up plans. And if you ask me, that's what is going to happen. Someone will shut it down, and then the person who restores it will be the anti-Christ. And that's why everyone will worship him.

But it says the mark will be on your right hand or forehead. That has already begun to happen. Some companies are offering employees the choice to have a tiny chip imbedded in their hand. It can be used outside some of the companies also.

The prophecy may be fulfilled in with some kind of mark (or chip) on people's hands or foreheads which is scary. But consider also the symbolism: the forehead symbolizes your thoughts, and the hand symbolizes your doings. So, its a mark (or a sign of allegiance) that covers what you believe and what you do. You can be marked by God Revelation 9:4, Revelation 14:1.... or you can be marked by the power and authority of mankind lead by Satan. The prophecy is frightening but the only way to act upon the warning is to seek the truth of God and then live by it, which puts you under His protection. I do think the beast is the internet. Notice in the verse, it says the beast has the number of a man. But, it doesn't say the beast is a man. It says, it has a man's number. And we are moving to a cashless society, you will only be able to buy and sell with a chipped card. And most people now already order everything on the internet, except maybe groceries. I know I do. And people have their whole homes connected to the internet, their appliances, security systems, baby monitors, televisions, plus your car is hooked to the internet and computerized. And children are totally addicted too. They can't put down their phones, or stay off of their tablets, and games. And there are children that do harm to their parents, when they punish them by taking away their phones. I really believe there is a lot to this, when an 8 year old girl stabs her mother for taking away her phone.
