Have you wondered, “What is the eternal fate of someone who commits suicide?”

The Scriptures show that these people are not cut off without hope. God will bring them back to life and give them their opportunity for eternal salvation! God “desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4 1 Timothy 2:4Who will have all men to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
American King James Version×
). When God says “all,” He means all. Even victims of suicide will have a chance for salvation!

For those who are suffering now, with depression or coping with the loss of a loved one to this horrible tragedy, there is hope!

Suicide is often a complex matter. Don’t be too quick to judge or to condemn people who take their own lives. Individuals who commit suicide often have been struggling with serious problems, such as depression, alcoholism or other forms of drug abuse. Taking one’s life isn’t the right way to deal with any trial, but the people who do are not thinking clearly. It is an unbearable burden from which they feel only death can give release.

When a person takes their life, those who are left behind often find themselves without hope. The Bible makes it clear that those who have had suicides in the family have the assurance from God that they will see their loved ones again.

God says He will resurrect all the dead (John 5:28-29 John 5:28-29 28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, to the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, to the resurrection of damnation.

), and we know that God wants everyone to have a full chance to repent and be forgiven and to be saved (2 Peter 3:9 2 Peter 3:9The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
American King James Version×
; 1 Timothy 2:4 1 Timothy 2:4Who will have all men to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

). The Bible shows that those who did not understand God’s spiritual truth during their lifetimes will have another chance at life, a chance to deal with their problems better.

Your loved one will rise again!

Christ spoke about the hope of the resurrection in one of the great episodes from His life. In John’s gospel, we read of Christ’s close friend Lazarus being sick and dying before Christ could get to his home in Bethany.

When Christ arrived at the home of Lazarus, he was told by Martha, his sister, that he had been dead for four days. “But even now,” she said, “I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”

To which Jesus said, “Your brother will rise again.” And Martha replied, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

And Jesus said to her: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

And Martha replied, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world” (John 11:22-27 John 11:22-27 22 But I know, that even now, whatever you will ask of God, God will give it you. 23 Jesus said to her, Your brother shall rise again. 24 Martha said to him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. 25 Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believes in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: 26 And whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Believe you this? 27 She said to him, Yes, Lord: I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

).

Then Christ went to the tomb of Lazarus and in a loud voice, He commanded Lazarus to come forth. It was an astonishing and undeniable miracle to show the power of God and the hope of the resurrection.

It is the hope of the resurrection that lifts us beyond the tragedy of the moment

The assurance of this resurrection is what allows us move forward in our life. Because we know that our loved one is waiting for the resurrection and it’s going to happen! And it will be a much better place at that time.

The apostle Paul wrote about the resurrection to a church reeling from the death of its members and needing the same help. He wrote: “But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus … For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven … And the dead in Christ will rise first.” Therefore, he said, “Comfort one another with these words” (1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning them which are asleep, that you sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain to the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

).

For those who are suffering now, with depression or coping with the loss of a loved one to this horrible tragedy, there is hope!

The Bible talks about a time when sorrow and tears will disappear from human experience. The book of Revelation speaks of a time when a new heaven and a new earth will be established. It says, “God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying … There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away” (Revelation 21:1-4 Revelation 21:1-4 1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. 2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

).

God the Father, we are told, judges from the “mercy seat” (Hebrews 9:5 Hebrews 9:5And over it the cherubim of glory shadowing the mercy seat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.
American King James Version×
). He dearly desires that all people who have lived, or will live, be in His family. Jesus Christ knows our frailty and therefore is our advocate at the right hand of our Father who is sitting on that throne of mercy. This includes all those who have suffered personally and taken their own lives.

The Father and Jesus Christ have not forgotten anyone. The brokenhearted, including those who committed suicide or even contemplated it, will ultimately be healed!
