Letter from Dan Preston – December 27, 2024
Good evening brethren, just a quick reminder that services are at 2:30 PM tomorrow in all three congregations.
Small leak = Big project
About this time last year, we discovered our upstair bathtub was leaking. I thought it was going to be a simple matter of just caulking around the tub, but boy was I wrong… Turns out the tub itself was cracked and had to be replaced.
What I quickly discovered was that the bathtub was the original one in the house. How did I know that? Well, for one, some of the construction crew left empty soda bottles under the tub that had the date on them. And for another, the tub wouldn’t physically fit through the door, meaning the walls had been built around it. So, out came the saw, and the tub made its way out of my house in a dozen pieces or so.
Remodeling
Of course, once we got the tub out, it was pretty clear the flooring needed to be replaced. And then I noticed the paint on the ceiling was peeling. And when we were picking out a new tub, we found that getting one the same color as the sinks was going to be expensive. So, long story short, you can see in the picture below what my bathroom looks like at the moment…
As you can see, we’re doing a complete remodel of the bathroom. Naturally, it’s cost more and taken longer than I figured (as do all home improvement projects), but in the end, we’ll have a brand new bathroom, have added value to our home and I will have had the excuse to buy several new toys, er, uh, tools…
A big return on investment
This project made me think about our Christian walk. It usually starts small. Maybe you grew up in another faith and wondered where the story of Christmas was in the Bible. You opened the Bible to look for it and were surprised it wasn’t there. Then you began to read some more and found out quite a few of the things you had been taught over your life didn’t match what the Bible taught. From there you set out to find out what real truth was and now, decades later, you’re living a much different life.
While each of our individual stories might vary, I hope you see the point. Being Christ-like is a life-long project. It might cost you some things, including jobs or even relationships. And it will certainly take longer than any of us wants. But in the end, you’ll have something brand new of real value - eternal life in the Kingdom of God!
