Letter from Dan Preston – December 5, 2025
Good evening brethren and Happy Sabbath! Just a reminder that we will be having a potluck in all three congregations this Sabbath. In addition, we will be having a Sermon Discussion after services in both Charlotte and Hickory.
Good reasons
Have you ever faced a choice where perhaps you are considering doing (or not doing) something and perhaps said to yourself, “Give me just one good reason?” Perhaps it was splurging a little on a new tool or item for the house. Maybe it was swinging on a vine into a creek, or something else that is a little more daring that what you would normally do. You want to do it, but you can’t quite justify it and so you need to justify it in some way. Just one good reason is all you need…
Reason for the season?
You hear that phrase a lot this time of year with people using it to refer to Jesus Christ. Similarly, they might say, ‘Put Christ back in Christmas.’ Of course, that’s kind of hard to do when He was never there in the first place.
Diligent students of the Bible will point out there’s no command to celebrate Christ’s birth. Likewise, we’re commanded not to mix any foreign religious practices into what God ordains as proper worship. Even the quickest research will show that most of what Christmas is today has its roots in pagan worship.
What are your reasons?
Any way you slice it, we should not be keeping Christmas. But it’s important to know your reasons. Not mine, not the church’s, but yours. They can overlap and be one and the same, but they need to be your reasons.
As the Christmas season begins to overtake our world, make sure and consider why it is you don’t keep Christmas. I look forward to hearing what you have to say in our Sermon Discussions the next two weeks on this topic!
