Letter from Dan Preston – February 28, 2025
Greetings everyone and happy Sabbath! Just a reminder there is a potluck after services in all three congregations tomorrow. In addition, there will be a Sermon Discussion in Charlotte and Hickory.
What am I hungry for?
Have you ever been sitting on the couch, and hunger strikes? You want something to snack on, but not sure what. Salty? Sweet? Should I be good and eat some fruit? Maybe we can’t decide, so we do a little bit of each! I’m no expert on diet, but that last choice is probably not a good idea…
What would probably be a better idea is to slow down your thought process and really think through not just what you want, but whether you should have a snack at all. Maybe you need to consider your calorie count for the day or blood sugar. Whatever the factors are, stopping to think is almost always a good idea.
Bigger choices
This concept applies not only to what we might snack on, but larger decisions in life. Should I paint my house? Can I afford a new car? Is it time to retire? In fact, this principle can - and should - be applied to VERY BIG decisions in life such as baptism, marriage and starting a family.
These major decisions are certainly worthy of taking some time to stop and think about. Unfortunately, what happens all too often is that life starts moving pretty quickly and we wind up making a decision we’re not quite ready for. When we feel that beginning to happen, there’s a Biblical principle we can apply to help us make the right decision.
Slow down, go fast
While none of us would dream of making a major decision in life without praying about it, how often do we consider fasting over such big choices? If it’s not a tool you’ve used before, it’s one I would certainly encourage you to apply the next time you face a weighty matter to decide.
Tomorrow, we’ll take a look at not only what fasting is, but how it can help us become more humble, draw closer to God and seek His will!
