Letter from Dan Preston – July 18, 2025

No Pin

Greetings all and happy Sabbath! Just a reminder that we will be having our Ladies Tea after services in both Charlotte and Hickory. If you have not already, please finish reading chapters 5-10 of Esther.

Timing is Everything

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “Timing is everything.” Whether it be on when to address a difficult issue, or delivering a punchline for a joke, good timing can make all the difference.

You could say the same thing about finding a good sale on some recently marked down steaks at the grocery store, or getting the last piece of dessert at a social.  If you’re off by just a few minutes, someone else might just get that deal or that sweet treat!

How to have good timing

When it comes to telling a joke, good timing is something that can be learned. Observing others who have it, practicing and learning on your own, etc.  When it comes to good deals, well sometimes that’s just luck.

But what about timing for other things? What about timing when it comes to the Holy Days - God’s appointed times? Is there any way to be sure we are observing them when we should?

God’s calendar

One of the interesting things about God’s Holy Days and His calendar is that He sort of gives us one and sort of doesn’t, at least not directly in scripture. Sure, we know some specific things such as Passover occurring on the 14th of the first month, Atonement being on the 10th day of the seventh month, etc. but when does each month start, and how long are they?

This is a subject that has been the source of much debate over the years. Luckily, while the Bible doesn't give us a calendar directly, it does tells us exactly what we need to know in regards to this topic. Tomorrow, we’ll exam why it is exactly we can be confident in using the Hebrew calendar to know when to keep God’s appointed Feasts!
