Letter from Dan Preston – June 6, 2025
Good evening brethren and Happy Sabbath! Just a quick reminder that we will have a potluck after services in all three congregations tomorrow.
Graduations
Tomorrow we will be celebrating our graduates - both from Sabbath School and High School. We have three that will be moving on from Sabbath School to our Teen program, and two that are graduating High School.
Both of these events are significant milestones in our young people’s lives and we should look forward to celebrating with them!
Milestones
As you might guess, a milestone was originally used to mark distances on roads. Although, contrary to popular belief, they weren’t actually placed ever mile as we know it (5,280 ft). They were originally placed on Roman roads, every 1,000 paces.
Mille is the Latin word for 1,000, as you probably know. Given that the average pace, or step, is around 3 feet, the original milestones were placed around every 3,000 ft, or what would be about 6/10th of a mile today.
Distance vs. Time
While the original term referred to a physical distance, we more commonly used the term milestone to refer to an achievement - one that typically comes with time. Graduations are a good example of this, but there are others as well.
Consider the first time you realized you needed to change your life. What about when you learned of repentance, baptism and receiving the Holy Spirit? Those are certainly major milestones in our walk of being Christ’s disciples, and worthy of remembering.
As we recognize our graduates tomorrow, let’s make sure we help them enjoy this achievement now, as well as continue to be encouragers throughout their lives and the future milestones they will reach!
