Letter from Dan Preston – March 13, 2026

Good evening brethren and Happy Sabbath!

It’s windy out there

Earlier today, I was enjoying a few minutes on the back porch with my mom. It was sunny and in the 60’s, but after a bit, we decided to head back inside. While the temperature was relatively warm, the wind made it feel rather cool. Not unusual weather for March I suppose.

After we came inside, I started thinking about what had just happened. Conditions were seemingly pleasant except for one factor - the wind.

An interesting metaphor

In some ways, life is kind of that same way. A lot of things might be going well. They might even be above average or good. But one little thing can come along and make all the good things seem unimportant.

It was then that it dawned on me that the wind was like a trial. Furthering the analogy is just how quickly it can arrive and unpredictable it can be. What’s more, you can’t actually see the wind, you just experience it.

How to deal with it

So, when the wind kicks up, what can you do? Well, not much to be honest. Most times you just have to go inside. If that’s not an option, you might look for something secure to hide behind, hunker down and wait for it to pass. While the same might be said of trials, there is at least one key difference.

“I will love You, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold,” (Psalm 18:1-2).

While good shelter can be hard to find when the storms of life blow in, we always have a place to go during trials. Sure, we might still have to wait for it to pass, but we can be assured that our Rock (compare Matthew 16:18 and 1 Corinthians 10:4) is always there, a stronghold we can always count on for protection!
