Letter from Dan Preston – September 19, 2025

No Pin

Good evening brethren and Happy Sabbath! Just a reminder there will be Sabbath School after services this week in all three congregations.

Dogs vs. Cats

It’s been a debate since the beginning of time - which is better, dogs or cats? Both have their strengths and drawbacks and most everyone has a preference.

Personally, I’ve had both. While my dog provided loyal companionship, the cats were much lower maintenance and helped take care of critters in and around the house. But to be honest, I’m not in a hurry to get another pet of any kind any time soon.

An interesting parallel

Just like dogs and cats are very different, each of us is different. Even people who grew up in similar social and economic environments often have very different opinions on things. And of course, if you have children, or you had brothers and sisters, you know just how different sibling who grew up in the same house can be!

What about types of Christians? Are there different types? At some level, you are either a devoted disciple of Jesus Christ or you are not. And while many would enthusiastically confirm they are, how do you explain so many different sects of Christianity?

Differences among Christians

What about people within our church today? People who believe and practice the same things doctrinally still have differences.  And, getting back to dogs and cats, have different strengths and weaknesses.  Some might struggle with profanity while it’s never a temptation to others. The same person who doesn’t find it hard to watch their language might lack motivation to serve.

The point is - we are all different and we all do some things better than others. And just like there’s no real perfect pet, there’s no perfect disciple of Christ. While we shouldn’t let this be an excuse to stop pursuing perfection, it’s a great reminder that just like we love our pets in spite of their faults, God loves us as well!
