Under Great Presssure?
Have you ever felt under great pressure? I know I have. At times, life weighs heavily on us—for different reasons, at different stages. It could be a trial, a hardship, or simply the accumulation of stress that makes life feel overwhelming.
If you’ve ever felt this way, you’re in good company. The Apostle Paul did too. He endured incredible pressure and was placed by God in difficult situations so that the Gospel could reach people throughout the Roman Empire. Let’s look at how Paul described one of these experiences in 2 Corinthians 1:8–11:
“We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about the troubles we experienced in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.” (2 Corinthians 1:8–11, NET)
Paul admits he felt crushed—so much so that he despaired of life itself. Some may feel that way today. If that’s you, notice what Paul learned: he could not rely on himself, but had to rely on God.
Before his conversion, Saul (as he was then known) was strong in his own abilities. But Paul, the converted servant of God, placed his hope fully in the One who raises the dead. He trusted that God would deliver him.
Paul also points to the power of prayer. The prayers of the brethren made a difference. Many prayed, and those prayers were answered. That same spiritual support is available today.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or pressed down, remember: God is faithful. He sees what we can’t handle alone and offers us strength. He renews those who cry out to Him when they realize they’ve reached the end of their own strength.
Paul's words are echoed in another powerful promise—1 Corinthians 10:13:
"No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it." (NKJV)
(Note: The Greek word for “temptation” can also be translated as “testing.”)
Many who have lived a few years can relate to what Paul describes. At some point, we hit a wall. But those who have been there can also say—it was in those moments that they saw the hand of God most clearly. It was there, in the pressure, that they were renewed.
So if you’re under pressure today, take heart. You’re not alone. God is near, and His strength is made perfect in our weakness. Trust in Him. He will see you through.
I’ll be in Chicago tomorrow, but my thoughts and prayers are with all the congregations this Sabbath.
