As we approach the Day of Pentecost, we reflect on the profound events recorded in Acts 2. On that day the Spirit of Truth, the Holy Spirit, was given to His disciples. It marked the beginning, the anniversary, of the New Testament Church.

Throughout Scripture, the Church of God is described in many ways, each offering insight into God's purpose and plan. One of the most powerful images is that of the Temple of God.

Let’s explore how the Apostle Paul speaks of this in the book of Ephesians, and how his words relate to the meaning of Pentecost:

“For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.”
(Ephesians 2:18–22, NKJV)

Through Jesus Christ, and by the Holy Spirit, we gain access to the Father. We become part of His household—no longer outsiders, but fellow citizens with the saints. Paul tells us this household, this Temple of God, is being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ Himself as the chief cornerstone. And who makes up the structure? Those who have received the Holy Spirit are the living materials—fitted together to grow into a holy temple in the Lord.

But how exactly are you being fitted into this temple?

Consider the physical temple built by King David’s son, Solomon. In 1 Chronicles 28:11–19, we read that God gave David detailed plans—every aspect of the temple's construction was intentional and precise. The materials were fitted together for God’s purpose. In the same way, God has a specific plan for you. He is shaping and placing each of us according to His perfect design.

Peter echoes this in 1 Peter 2:5, describing believers as living stones being built into a spiritual house. Day by day, week by week, year by year, God is at work in our lives—refining, positioning, and fitting us perfectly into His spiritual temple.

We may not always understand the circumstances we face. Sometimes the "fitting" process is difficult or unclear. Yet, just as the temple plans passed to Solomon were thoughtfully prepared, so too are God’s plans for each of us. His design is flawless.

As Pentecost draws near, let’s focus not only on the Church as the firstfruits in God’s plan of salvation, but also on the personal role that God has for each spirit-led son and daughter in His temple. Let’s trust that, through His Spirit, God is fitting you with purpose and precision into His Spiritual Temple.

Let us, by God’s Spirit, continue to grow together—living stones shaped by the Master Builder—for His glory.
