Different strokes for different folks

I used to spend a lot of time in gas stations for my old job. I would observe how they used the gas pumps and do a variety of tests on the nozzles. All that time watching people taught me a couple of things.

First, a gas station is a dangerous place to be! People zoom in and out, not paying attention to any pedestrians that might be walking by. Second, I learned that some people treat gas stations much differently than I do.

A quick stop or time to indulge?

I myself try to get in and out of a gas station as quickly as possibly. Fill my tank and go like it’s the Southern 500. Others treat it like a day out with the family. The whole car unloads, everyone goes inside, gets snacks and drinks and then leaves without ever getting gas.

This of course is the appeal of the convenience store. It’s quick and easy. Of course the downside is that it’s more expensive to shop this way, and the selection isn’t very healthy. A regular grocery store would be the far better choice for most of our food shopping.

What is church to you?

When it comes to church, how do you treat it? Is it someplace you go to get what you want real quick? Or a place you go to get the supplies for a truly healthy and nourishing meal?

How we treat going to services can say a lot about us. If we only go there looking to get what we want, we open ourselves up to becoming spiritually malnourished and weak, susceptible to illness.

When you head out the door to church tomorrow, ask yourself: “What is church to me? A convenience store, or a grocery?”
