Biblical Literacy
Time Magazine is running a cover story this week on Biblical literacy. this follows off a recently published book of the subject by Stephen Prothero. Here is a quote:
"According to Religious Literacy, polls show that nearly two-thirds of Americans believe the Bible holds the answers to "all or most of life's basic questions," but pollster George Gallup has dubbed us "a nation of biblical illiterates." Only half of U.S. adults know the title of even one Gospel. Most can't name the Bible's first book."
There is no doubt most people are not well versed in the Bible. The article profiles Biblical literacy courses in the public schools. On the surface this is not a bad idea. The difficulty comes in the quality of teaching and the bias a teacher can bring to the subject. Done in the right way such a course could be a sell out standing room only event.
One must first know the basics about the Bible. That comes from reading
it. The next, and most important, step is determining whether or not it is true.

Darris McNeely is a retired elder in the United Church of God. He and his wife, Debbie, have served in the ministry for more than 53 years. They have two sons, who are both married, and four grandchildren. Darris continues teaching at Ambassador Bible Center and is a member of the Council of Elders.
