Bird Flu Remains Threat

1 minute read time

The past weeks has seen a number of articles talking about a stain of bird flu stalking Southeast Asia that worries world health officials. Reuters is reporting today that another person has died from the flu.

H5V1 is a strain of flu found in bird populations and has made random jumps to humans when they are in close contact with animals having the virus. The fear is that this virus could find itself in a human host having another more common type of influenza virus and mutate into a new super virus that could rapidly spread through humans. There is no vaccine for a yet to develop virus and the potential for millions of deaths is very real. Many health officials say we are overdue for another influenza pandemic of the type that swept the world in 1918 killing more than 20 million people.
