The Gate of the Year

1 minute read time

I have received a number of emails from readers who appreciated my January “Restoration” column where I use the quote from a poem used by King George VI in a broadcast in 1939 as England and the Commonwealth were going to war.

The poem has quite a history as this article shows. The poem was also read at the funeral of the Queen Mother in 2002. Here is another story about the poem.

One reader told me the poem was used in an old Jimmy Stewart movie, “The Mortal Storm”.

I have always liked the poem and am glad it struck a chord with our audience. Poetry is a good thing. We all should read a little poerty on a regular basis.
