Healing Words
We can speak the truth without making it “us” against “them.”
People from both sides of the United States political spectrum keep saying demeaning things about the other side. The wisest and greatest man to ever walk this earth said: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand” (Matthew 12:25).
Do not think we can avoid this fate in these modern times because people are more “enlightened” or “civilized.” We cannot trust in our military, our wealth or the magnanimity of other countries. Those that hate us are watching and waiting for us to destroy ourselves from within.
If we continue to quarrel among ourselves without regard for the outcome to our country, Jesus has told us what to expect. We see already that important decisions are not being reached because of the infighting. We see people destroying their own neighborhoods because of anger and distrust.
Are our words leading to healing and unity or are they stirring up more strife? We can speak the truth without making it “us” against “them.”
The divide between those who stand for the morals and the truth of the Bible and those who give it little thought is growing into a chasm. It is bound to stir others up when we stand for God and His way. We just need to make sure our words are said with love and deference toward our fellow man. If they take exception, make it be because they choose a different path, not because we said it to demean them. It is one thing to have a difference of opinion and an entirely different thing to speak with disrespect toward others.
Choose words that heal the breach as much as is possible, without forsaking the true wisdom that cannot be compared to the wisdom of man.
“'For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,' says the Lord. 'For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts'" (Isaiah 55:8-9).
