Are You Really Standing?

A writer named Wendell Johnson stated the obvious: “‘Always’ and ‘never’ are two words you should always remember never to use.” These words do not leave room for doubting, taking heed, entertaining another thought or admitting that we do not know everything. Paul put it differently when he wrote, “Let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12). We have a constant need to check the direction we travel in life because we are similar to a sailing ship that is buffeted by the wind and sea and has a constant pressure that can easily move it off course unless carefully watched.

We ought to know that one day we will stand before our Maker (Romans 14:10). We will be held responsible for our words and our actions in life. Since we are affected by this changing world each day, we need to take heed to our values and examine ourselves often. “Always” and “never” do not leave much room to maneuver or to check our position. Stand we must, even when all about us changes. Take care that you are standing upright.
