Having Too Much

1 minute read time

For some strange reason, people who have too much or are given too much seem to find it very hard to appreciate what they have.

Jesus said a prophet does have honor, but all too often it does not exist in his own home among those who know him (Matthew 13:57). Israel had ample indications that God was with them, but they did not treasure that. Children of poor people may put a great deal of effort into their studies and preparations for a future while those who are wealthy may cause some concerns for their parents (Ecclesiastes 2:19).

We read that a satisfied person tramples on or disregards something most people would think is wonderful—such as honeycomb—while a starving person finds almost any food a flavorful delight (Proverbs 27:7). Having too much can often cause great problems because our minds do not readily rest on just having enough. We tend to want more and have a disdain for people and things that somehow have become “common” to us. It is better to have little but rejoice in it than to have plenty and be dissatisfied.
