The Need to Be Needed
There is within most people a strong need to feel that somebody needs us. That need may not be recognized or admitted, but it is there.
God seems to have designed a plan to supply that need to be needed in the way that He designed humans. Babies are born and immediately are in need of love, comfort, food and all that sustains life. Parents are desperately needed by the child and find great satisfaction in successfully bringing that child to adulthood. There sometimes is a shock when the child no longer needs the support of the parent. We call that the “empty nest syndrome” in some places. These experiences all underline the fact that we feel much better about life when we know that at least one person really does need us—we have a need to feel needed.
David wrote a Psalm that clearly fits into the life of Jesus Christ our Savior. In that psalm we read how Jesus as a baby on His mother’s breasts trusted in His mother, but also in God (Psalm 22:9-10). Jesus Christ needed the loving care of Joseph and Mary, and they rejoiced in the Son they were given to raise. There are always people who are in need. When we look about us and focus on the needs of others, we can fill the need that is within ourselves—by a kind deed or thoughtful act. Jesus knew that the Samaritan was also blessed when he did a good deed. Go and do likewise (Luke 10:36-37).
