Stop Digging

1 minute read time

Common sense is a wonderful thing that grows out of the blood, sweat and tears that life sometimes offers us.

A wise bit of advice is, “If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging.” That advice seems too obvious, and yet individuals, companies and governments seem blind to it when it comes to debt and owing money. Having debts becomes a heavy burden to carry, but all too often the person does not look at the cause—which is spending. We put ourselves into debt by not thinking clearly and not controlling our wants.

God wants those who obey Him to be lenders and not borrowers, because borrowers are slaves (Proverbs 22:7). When financial troubles come, we need to make a strong lifestyle change to learn to be content with what we have and stop yearning for that which we cannot afford (Hebrews 13:5). Stop digging is good advice for a number of “holes” we have made for ourselves. Don’t keep doing that which causes trouble, but seek ways not to make things worse. Seems obvious—or does it?
