Revelation Part 32

Revelation 8 begins with the opening of the seventh and final seal: 

“When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour” (Revelation 8:1). 

This silence is significant because of the tremendous praise and activity that has surrounded God's throne in the previous chapters. Revelation 4 describes the four living creatures continually praising God, while the twenty-four elders worship before the throne. In Revelation 5, the worship expands as millions of angels join the song, and then every creature in heaven and on earth gives honor and glory to God and the Lamb. The chapter ends with “Amen.” Now, as the seventh seal is opened, heaven becomes silent. The contrast communicates the seriousness of what is about to take place.

By this point, the events represented by the first six seals have already unfolded. The four horsemen have ridden: the white horse represents religious deception, the red horse represents war, the black horse represents famine and scarcity, and the pale horse represents disease and death. The fifth seal describes the persecution and martyrdom of God's people, those who remained separate from the religious counterfeits of the world and stayed faithful to the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. The sixth seal brings great heavenly signs, including the shaking of the earth, the darkening of the sun, the moon becoming like blood, and the stars falling. Humanity is finally confronted with the power and authority of God.

Revelation 7 then provides an interlude before the seventh seal is opened. God's servants are sealed, marking those who belong to Him before the judgments intensify. The saints may experience Satan's wrath, but God's wrath is not directed against those who are His. The chapter also describes the innumerable multitude that comes out of the great tribulation. By this point, the world has been brought to the threshold of the Day of the Lord.

The seventh seal contains the remaining judgments that lead to Christ's return. The structure of Revelation is important: the seventh seal contains the seven trumpets, and the seventh trumpet contains the seven bowls or vials. Therefore, the opening of the seventh seal begins the final sequence of God's judgments before Jesus Christ returns to establish His rule.

The tribulation associated with Satan's persecution reaches a crescendo with the fifth seal and the martyrdom of God's people. The sixth seal follows with the heavenly signs, and Revelation 7 shows God's servants being sealed and the innumerable multitude coming out of the great tribulation. The seventh seal now moves the narrative into the Day of the Lord, the period of divine judgment described throughout Scripture.

God's judgment is certain. Psalm 7:9 says, 

“Let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, establish the just, for the righteous God tests the hearts and minds.” 

God's people face trials in this life that reveal what is in their hearts. Abraham's willingness to give everything to God demonstrated his faith.  

Psalm 9 similarly describes God as the righteous Judge. Verse 11 adds that God is angry with the wicked every day. He destroys the wicked, blots out their name, and establishes His throne for judgment: 

“He shall judge the world in righteousness, and He shall administer judgment for the peoples in uprightness” (Psalm 9:7–8). 

Verse 16 says, 

“The Lord is known by the judgment He executes.” 

These passages help establish the biblical foundation for the judgments that unfold in Revelation.

Revelation 8:2 introduces the next stage: 

“And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets.” 

The seven angels are prepared to announce the next series of judgments.

The trumpet judgments are part of the seventh seal. The first six seals have brought the world through deception, war, famine, death, persecution, and the heavenly signs announcing God's intervention. Now the final sequence begins. The silence in heaven marks the transition from the events of the first six seals to the more direct judgments represented by the seven trumpets.

The seventh seal therefore represents a major turning point in Revelation. The world has been warned, God's servants have been sealed, and the Day of the Lord is beginning. The remaining judgments will demonstrate God's authority over the earth and bring the present age toward its appointed conclusion. The throne of God remains in control, and the events that follow are not random. They unfold according to the plan revealed by God and ultimately lead to the return of Jesus Christ.
