Revelation Part 47
Revelation 11 has reminded us that God's servants have always been called to bear witness amid a rebellious world.
In Revelation 11:13, after the witnesses' resurrection and ascension, a great earthquake occurs. Ten percent of the city falls, and 7,000 people are killed. The earthquake recalls other significant moments in Scripture when God intervened through dramatic physical events. One such example is in Matthew 27 when there was an earthquake at the exact moment that Christ died. The survivors respond by giving glory to the God of heaven.
This does not necessarily mean that all of those who give glory have experienced complete repentance and conversion. It does, however, demonstrate that God's intervention has gained their attention.
The second woe is then declared to be past, and the third woe is coming quickly. The third woe includes the 7th trumpet and the 7 bowls or vials that will be poured out on humanity.
The interlude is now coming to an end. The seventh trumpet is about to sound, bringing the final judgments represented by the bowls and leading to the return of Jesus Christ.
Revelation 11 has reminded us that God's servants have always been called to bear witness amid a rebellious world. The two witnesses represent the continuation of that pattern in the final days. They will speak God's truth, call people to repentance, and explain the meaning of the judgments taking place around them. Their ministry demonstrates that God does not judge without first providing warning.
For us, the lesson is not simply to understand who the two witnesses might be. It is to consider what we are doing with the witness God has already given us. We are called to be salt and light in the world, as Jesus instructed in Matthew 5:16:
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
We are to set a godly example for the next generation, as Titus 2:1-8 teaches, and to serve as ambassadors for Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:20 says that God makes His appeal through us as though He were pleading with people to be reconciled to Him.
We look forward to the time represented by God's Holy Days, the return of Jesus Christ, the removal of Satan, and the establishment of God's Kingdom. At the same time, we should recognize that the events leading to that time will involve tremendous suffering and judgment. That should strengthen our resolve now. We should let our light shine, remain faithful to God's truth, and help others understand the way that leads to reconciliation with God. Revelation 11 points toward the culmination of God's plan, but it also reminds us that until that day arrives, we have a responsibility to faithfully serve as His witnesses.
