Guatemala Blog (Eagle's Nest Orphanage) December 29, 2013

So, after two days in Guatemala City and a three-hour school bus ride, we made it to Eagle's Nest Orphanage. The drive here was beautiful and there were people alongside the road the whole way. As we got closer to Solola (the city of the orphanage), the average age of the people along the road became less and less. We passed many groups of children who would wave at us as we drove by. I waved back but noticed that the children didn't seem to be waving to say "hi." I later found out that when it's close to Christmastime, the homeless children/families will wave at people that pass by in hopes of receiving some sort of gift. When we pulled into the parking lot of the orphanage, we were greeted by the directors as well as a few of the orphans. One orphan in particular had such an awesome and hilarious personality. He didn't know many English words, but knew how to express himself very well. After we got settled into our bunks (which are triple-deckers!!!), we went on a tour of the orphanage given by the director. The location of this orphanage couldn't be more perfect. The view overlooks Lake Atitlan and the city of Solola. I can't wait to get started on this project and finally get to meet these adorable and loving children!
