AI, Algorithms and the Church’s Mission

A crew of five media department employees made the trip to Nashville, Tennessee, for two days for the National Religious Broadcasters 2026 International Christian Media Convention. We listened to panels, lectures and workshops on topics relevant to UCG’s work in media.

AI dominated as a topic of interest among many of those sessions, covered from many angles including the ethics of using AI in pastoral and ministry work, possible uses for translation into new languages, the legal ramifications of using AI, and more. There were also practical sessions on topics such as “should your podcast have video?” and “how to create compelling thumbnails for YouTube.”

For lunch Thursday, we met with the media team in attendance from Living Church of God: Mike Desimone, Wallace Smith and Adam West. We shared our experiences with each other, traded software tips, and connected both on our mutual calling to preach the gospel as well as on a personal level over sandwiches and overpriced bottled water (do conventions have a bylaw about overpriced water?). It was nice to meet them and cross paths throughout the two days we were there.

As with any convention, some sessions were highly valuable and others less so. The true benefits emerged in the discussions that followed. During the four-and-a-half-hour drive each way and meals together, our team had many hours to chew on the ideas we heard and consider how they might advance UCG’s mission to preach the gospel of the Kingdom of God. Those extended conversations also strengthened our unity as a team.

We came home with fresh perspective, practical ideas and better questions—exactly the kind of fuel that helps our media work preach the gospel more effectively. Most of all, the trip equipped and edified our team as we continue to further UCG’s mission together.
