Fasting is a real part of being a zealous and righteous true Christian.  Jesus Christ set the example of fasting, that we would fast and that it and prayer are required for having and building faith.  It is a key tool given by God for us to humble ourselves, to come before him seeking spiritual strength, growth and bringing us closer to God and seeking to be one with God.  It refocuses us and stirs God to react to us.  Fasting is the way of God, the way to God
